2 KINGS 9-11

Focus Verse: When Joram saw Jehu, he said, “Is it peace, Jehu?” And he answered, “What peace, so long as the harlotries of your mother Jezebel and her witchcrafts are so many?”
2 Kings 9:22

The ever-elusive peace. Everyone wants it, but what are we willing to do to get it? Western culture today almost idolizes peace, which is strange because we are farther away from peace today (at least on a day to day basis with one another) than we ever have been in the past. I’m not even necessarily talking about wars happening around the world, though those definitely are occurring. I’m talking about the peace with have with those around us, and that is something, especially in the United States right now, that we are completely missing.

Now please don’t check out here, I know the bumper stickers are cheesy, but there is a lot of truth to the cheese: “No God, no peace; know God, know peace.” It’s not popular. In fact, our culture today rages against this statement. We don’t need God to have peace. We need tolerance, acceptance, equality, freedom…those are the things that will bring perfect peace. And how is that working? As I said, we are farther from peace in this country than we ever have been.

I’m not saying that there is anything bad about tolerance and acceptance and equality and freedom. But we have elevated these ideas to replace God. And I think if you dig down really, really deep into the cultural and sub-cultural context of these beliefs (something I don’t have time to do here), you’ll find that all of them fall short when asked to stand on their own. Tolerance doesn’t makes sense, and in fact, can’t be done perfectly, unless there is an outside source higher than tolerance driving it (God). The same could be said with all of these other values.

Do we really want peace? Are we really willing to try anything to achieve it? Then why not at least try turning to Christ. Don’t turn to the church…they’ve royally screwed up peace in the past. Don’t turn to religious leaders…they will always let you down. Turn to Jesus Christ, the Word of God. He will never fail you. He will give you peace.
