JUDGES 13-15

Focus Verse: Then Manoah asked the angel of the Lord, “What is your name? For when all this comes true, we want to honor you.”
“Why do you ask my name?” the angel of the Lord replied. “It is too wonderful for you to understand.”
Then Manoah took a young goat and a grain offering and offered it on a rock as a sacrifice to the Lord. And as Manoah and his wife watched, the Lord did an amazing thing. As the flames from the altar shot up toward the sky, the angel of the Lord ascended in the fire. When Manoah and his wife saw this, they fell with their faces to the ground.
Judges 13:17-20

I love Christophanies in the Old Testament! A Christophany is when a physical manifestation of Jesus shows up in the Old Testament, like when Jacob wrestles with God, when Moses talks face to face with God, etc. This encounter that Manoah and his wife experience is another example.

The foreshadowing in verse 20 of Jesus’ ascension is especially beautiful, but I want to focus on verse 18 this morning. How beautiful is the name of Jesus? How beautiful is the Gospel? I can understand the statement, that there is no way anyone could truly understand how wonderful the name of Jesus is without knowing what Jesus was going to do for the world. Without knowing about the cross and resurrection, is there any way to truly understand how beautiful the name of Jesus really is?

I would even argue that even to those who know the Gospel, we still can’t even begin to get deep enough into how powerful the name of Jesus is. Healing, wholeness, perfection, peace, mercy, rest, salvation, power, joy, strength, comfort and anything and everything else you could ever need found in one name…the name above every other name…the name of Jesus.

When is the last time you have been in awe of the name of Jesus?

Take some time today.
