JUDGES 1-2

Focus Verse: “After that generation died, another generation grew up who did not acknowledge the Lord or remember the mighty things he had done for Israel. The Israelites did evil in the Lord’s sight and served the images of Baal.
Judges 2:10-11

Clearly the Israelites missed one of the biggest commandments the Lord gave them, and believe it or not, it wasn’t the one about not serving other gods. They clearly missed the boat on the one about teaching their children about the commands the Lord had given them and all of the things the Lord had done for them.

I can see this same thing happening in some Christian circles today. We cannot let other people disciple our children. I take that back. We cannot let other people be the only ones who disciple our children. Too many parents send their children to “Christian school” and take them to church on Sunday and Wednesday, but inside their own home, they never talk to their kids about the things of the Lord. This is completely unacceptable.

If you are expecting other people to disciple you children so that you don’t have to, you’ve completely missed it, just like the Israelites here. Your children are YOUR responsibility. DISCIPLE THEM! That doesn’t mean that you have to have a doctorate in theology, it just means that your kids need to know AND SEE how much you love Jesus or they will never want what you’re trying to sell.

And let’s step this outside of children for a second. If you can’t tell people “taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalm 34:8) because you have tasted and seen for yourself, you will never be able to get people where they need to go. Not all of the blame here rests on the parents of the Israelites. Every single one of us has to have a personal experience with God. We cannot depend on someone else’s experience to carry us through life’s storms.

Parents, disciple your children. If you aren’t a parent, disciple SOMEONE! But EVERYONE, find your own personal experience with God. He is a God of relationship and He offers one to every single one of us. If you don’t have a relationship with Him, you will never be able to lead anyone else into a relationship with Him.
