JOSHUA 22-24

Focus Verse: “Then Joshua warned the people, ‘You are not able to serve the Lord, for he is a holy and jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins. If you abandon the Lord and serve other gods, he will turn against you and destroy you, even though he has been so good to you.”’

Joshua 24:19-20

This is such a strange conversation, but such a fantastic illustration of the Gospel. Joshua makes the famous statement (though most people probably don’t realize this even comes from Joshua, they just like to hang the Hobby Lobby signs up around their house) to the Israelites to decide this day whether they will serve the Lord or not, and as for him and his house, they will serve the Lord. So the Israelites respond with an emphatic, “We will too!” (that’s not actually in the Bible…I’m paraphrasing). To which, Joshua gives the response we see in today’s focus verse.

Isn’t that hilarious? “Alright guys, you need to serve the Lord with all your heart. Can we all agree that we are going to do that today?” And they all shout, “YEAH!” And you respond, “Too bad…you can’t.”

But it is so true. We have to get to the point where we realize that we cannot follow God and do what He asks of us on our own. We have to be completely surrendered to Him and His will. That is the only way we stand a chance at obeying Him.

Once we realize that what Joshua is telling the Israelites here is completely true of us as well, then we can move into the realization that we need God to take over every aspect of our lives. We understand why we need to completely surrender everything and let Him run the show.

Once we reach this point of true Gospel change, God will do amazing things in our lives. So how about it? Will you serve the Lord wholeheartedly? You can’t. But you can surrender to Him and let Him do it through you.
