Focus Verse: “So the Lord said to Joshua, ‘Rise up! Why is it that you have fallen on your face? Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. And they have even taken some of the things under the ban and have both stolen and deceived. Moreover, they have also put them among their own things. Therefore the sons of Israel cannot stand before their enemies; they turn their backs before their enemies, for they have become accursed. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy the things under the ban from your midst. Rise up! Consecrate the people and say, “Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, for thus the Lord, the God of Israel, has said, ‘There are things under the ban in your midst, O Israel. You cannot stand before your enemies until you have removed the things under the ban from your midst.’”’”

Joshua 7:10-13

What a crushing blow this must have been! The Israelites just get done demolishing the walls of Jericho by doing nothing but marching around them and yelling, and now they can’t even defeat this miserable excuse for an army from Ai. Talk about embarrassing! There are a few things to learn from this failure (just like any failure we face).

First, sin will always stand in the path between you and the victory that God has for you. As long as there is disobedience to the Lord in your life (and here’s the crazy thing from this passage, this disobedience came from one man!), you are going to be hard pressed to find victory in the Lord. Sure, you might mask it for awhile with worldly success. But worldly success does not equal God’s victory. Sin and God’s victory cannot go together.

Second, what does God command Joshua to do here in the focus passage from today? Stop pouting about it, find the sin and get rid of it! Way too many times (as I’ve witnessed in my own life) I love to do the sitting around and crying and pouting because I didn’t get the victory I thought, when God is calling me to stop pouting and start getting my heart right. But no victory is going to come from sitting around and crying about the sin in your life if you aren’t going to DO anything to get rid of that sin. Unfortunately that is where so many of us are stuck with God. We will cry about our sin, but we won’t turn from it and take the steps necessary to get rid of it.

So what’s holding you back from the victory God has for you? If you really aren’t sure, ask God to search your heart, just like Joshua did in this chapter. He will reveal to you what’s holding you back. Once He does though, don’t just sit there and cry. Do something about it! Then sit back and watch Him fight for you!
