DEUTERONOMY 28-29

Focus Verse: “You are standing here today to enter into the covenant of the Lord your God. The Lord is making this covenant, including the curses. By entering into the covenant today, he will establish you as his people and confirm that he is your God, just as he promised you and as he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. But you are not the only ones with whom I am making this covenant with its curses. I am making this covenant both with you who stand here today in the presence of the Lord our God, and also with the future generations who are not standing here today.”
Deuteronomy 29:12-15

I used to be a huge country music fan. Truth be told…I used to be the lead singer in a country music band. Cowboy hat, bandana, boots, huge belt buckle. I’ve since repented of those ways, but this verse reminded me of one of those songs that I used to sing. The band Rascal Flatts sang a song that went like this: “God blessed the broken road that led me straight to you.”

Now they are a country band, so they took the cheesy love song route here, but God is kind of saying the same thing to the Israelites here…just with less twang in His voice. Everything that God had done up to this point, everything with Adam and Eve, with Noah, with Abraham, with Jacob, with Moses in Egypt; all of those things were for this exact moment, so that God’s people could enter into this covenant with God and take the land promised to them.

Here’s the craziest thing about God though: since He can see outside of time, even the things that were going to happen, things like the events that have taken place in your life and my life, all of those things were for this moment, when we would be called God’s people and we would call Him our God. Clearly there were bumps in the road. There were bumps in the road to the Promised Land, there were bumps in the road after the Promised Land (that’s why Rascal Flatts called it the “broken road”…who knew they were being prophetic).

Every event in your life is for this moment. No matter how badly you’ve messed up, no matter how well you’ve done, whether you’re rich or poor or somewhere in between; whether you’re a Christian or a Jew or a Muslim or an Atheist; every bump in the road has been for the moment when God offers you this covenant. What will your answer be? “Yes, I will be your man/woman and You will be my God” or “No, I’ll do this on my own.”

If your answer is no, then you’re on your own. If your answer is yes, then you have to look at where this road leads. This road ultimately ends at Calvary. The cross of Jesus Christ is the final upholding of the covenant that God made with us. It is the cornerstone in making us His people and giving us access so that He can be our God. Without Christ, we can do nothing in this covenant; with Him, nothing is impossible.
