EXODUS 36-38

Focus Verse: “So Moses gave the command, and this message was sent throughout the camp: ‘Men and women, don’t prepare any more gifts for the sanctuary. We have enough!’ So the people stopped bringing their sacred offerings. Their contributions were more than enough to complete the whole project.”

Exodus 36:6-7

And every Pastor in the room shouts, “Amen!” Oh to have this problem in our church. People being so willing to give that we have to preach a message on Sunday mornings for them to stop giving! That’s just unheard of!

But maybe the problem isn’t entirely on the people.

I am curious if there is a church out there that would have the faith to tell the people to stop giving. Or if the funds would just be “redirected” into another church fund.

Now it is impossible and irresponsible to put all churches into the same category. Just the same as it is irresponsible to put all people into one category. Not all churches are “mega-churches”, quite the opposite actually. The majority of churches in the United States don’t have multi-million dollar complexes and thousands of people attending services each week. Similarly, not all congregations of people are eager to part with their hard-earned money…and don’t get me started on those who prefer to hold on to their tithe as if it’s a tip for a waiter or waitress who performs up to their expectations.

Here’s the root of both problems though: a lack of trust in God.

If a church really trusts God to be its financial director, that church will keep exactly what it needs to function and then give the remainder away or tell the people that they can stop giving these special funds.

Likewise, if people trust God with their finances, they won’t listen when the church tells them to stop giving. They’ll just find another cause to give to.

And God will bless both of these.

We see it in this situation with the Israelites. The people trusted God to provide for them. He provided their meals daily for them, completely supernaturally. He delivered them out of slavery in Egypt, and on top of that, had the Egyptians give all of their riches away just to get the Israelites to leave faster!

They trusted God so much, that it was easy to give all of this stuff away. God’s presence was with them! What else did they need? And the same was true with “the church”. They had a clear mission from God: build His tabernacle. They knew the materials, the measurements, their purpose. They didn’t need anything else.

When you are in God’s presence and listening to Him, obeying Him, it’s easy to keep your eyes fixed on the right thing…HIM.
