EXODUS 13-15

Focus Verse: “By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.”

Exodus 13:21-22

Throughout the Old Testament, God showed His glory through this pillar of cloud and pillar of fire. It was the glory of God that showed the Israelites where and when they should go and where and when they should stay. In the very next chapter, 14:19-20, the pillar moves in front of the Israelites and becomes their protector, keeping the Egyptian army from reaching the Israelites throughout the night.

It’s all about the glory of God. It is His glory that leads us. It is His glory that frees us. It is His glory that sustains us. It is His glory that protects us. Anything you need is found in His presence. So don’t just look to God for answers, look to Him for HIM!

John 1:14 has an interesting impact on this reading. We are told here by John that Jesus is the Word of God become flesh to show us God’s glory. More than fire, more than a cloud, this is God’s Word, His only begotten Son, come to show us His glory more completely.

So apply the same principle: Jesus tells us where and when to go and where and when to stay. Jesus moves in front of us to protect us from those looking to do us harm. Step by step, God’s glory, revealed through His Son, guides us through every part of our life…if we let Him.

The Israelites had a pillar of cloud and of fire…we have Jesus!
