EXODUS 1-3

Focus Verse: “But Moses protested, ‘If I go to the people of Israel and tell them, “The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,” they will ask me, “What is his name?’ Then what should I tell them?”’

Genesis 13

As if it weren’t obvious from Exodus 2:12, when Moses kills the Egyptian, Moses identifies as an Israelite, but has no idea who God actually is; he doesn’t know Him by name.

But that is the awesome part about our God! He wants to be known by name. He wants our relationship with Him to be personal. Let’s dig in a little deeper though and look at how He introduces Himself to Moses.

First of all, Moses is a murderer. Yet God calls him into His presence. How amazing is that! Second, Moses’ reaction is a vital part of this equation. Moses immediately realized that he was not worthy to be in this position. He realizes that he isn’t worth to even be standing in God’s presence and covers his face, and he also realizes that he is unable to be the savior or the Israelites that God is calling him to be.

What God does next give me goosebumps. God equips Moses for the task at hand, God arms Moses with the only weapon he will need. His staff? No. Aaron? No. Those both came later as security blankets when Moses continued to protest.

God give Moses HIMSELF! “I will be with you.” And if that’s not enough, God then arms Moses with His Name: I AM. Yahweh. “This is my eternal name, my name to remember for all generations.”

I’ve been writing a lot about walking in the Spirit lately, and here it is again. God give Moses His name and promises to be with him. Initially that’s all God gives Moses because that’s all he needs.

Where do you need deliverance this morning? Where are you, like the Israelites, captive to the enemy? Are you a slave to fear? To a bad family situation? Are you captive under your own poor attitude or is there a health problem that you need freed from? No matter what your situation, YOU can’t do anything to free yourself.

Positive thinking can’t free you. Exercising more can’t free you. Calming meditation can’t free you. Prayer can’t free you (before you cast your first stone give me a second). None of these things are bad things, but they have no power on their own. So many times when we need something from God we try harder to earn our freedom. That’s not how the kingdom of God works though. Unless everything you do is anchored in a complete dependence on God, it’s you working your own salvation. Unless we are more concerned with God’s will than our own, we will alway be standing in the way of our own salvation.

God armed Moses with Himself. A personal, relational God. He gave Moses His name. Moses didn’t need anything else to defeat the Egyptians and free Israel. You don’t need anything else either. Call on the mighty name of the Lord and walk with Him. He has promised you that He will go with you.

What a Savior!
