Focus Verse: “Pharaoh said to Joseph, ‘I had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.’

‘I cannot do it,’ Joseph replied to Pharaoh, ‘but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires.’”

Genesis 41:15-16

A vital realization that we all need to come to, it is the beginning of the Gospel message and the first step to walking in the Spirit – there is NOTHING that we can do on our own. When we walk in the Spirit, we rely on God for everything that we do – we WALK with God.

One of my favorite passages in the Bible is from Genesis 5:21-24. It holds the genealogy from Adam to Noah, and this particular passage talks about the man Enoch. There are nine men listed in this genealogy, but Enoch sticks out like a sore thumb. Every other man, we are told, “lived” a certain number of years and then died. Enoch on the other hand “walked with God” and “then was no more, because God took him away.”

I don’t know that these other men listed in Genesis 5 did anything wrong. They may even be in heaven when we all get there. But there was clearly something very different that Enoch did in his life that these other men weren’t even close to. If I had to guess, based on what God’s Word tells us, I would assume that Enoch realized there was nothing he could do without God.

He relied on God for every single step he took. He relied on God for every breath of air he breathed.

Joseph’s answer to Pharaoh takes us off guard. It probably surprised Pharaoh too, and may have even been a breath of fresh air for the Egyptian king. With everyone trying to put their best foot forward in front of him and acting like they have it all together, here is a foreigner who makes no attempt to have all the answers, but instead, claims to know a strange God who does.

So let’s get real with ourselves for a minute: Whom are you pretending for? Do you have all the answers? Are you doing everything you can to impress those around you? Are you morally righteous? Are you free from sin?

I’m going to be real with you here…if you answered yes to those questions, you will be crushed! God knew as soon as Adam and Eve took that bite that you wouldn’t be able to bear that weight. That’s why He has been calling mankind to WALK WITH HIM since.

Are you walking in the Spirit? It’s never too late start. Just tell God, and everyone else, that you can do nothing on your own, that you are completely dependent on Jesus Christ and His perfect work on the cross. Then just listen to Him and do what He says! It’s that simple. It’s that hard.
